Set it on the tread or tuck it against the riser, and move it whenever you like. Somewhere exposed or on a slope, a couple of outdoor adhesive pads will hold it steady.

However many the pack size at the top of the page says: one, two, three or four. It is the same light in each case, just bundled. For a typical garden flight, one every two or three steps works well. They mark each tread rather than flooding the whole run, so a rhythm down the steps beats one bright light at the end.

The catch with step lights specifically is shade: steps often sit against a wall or under a handrail for much of the day, so the light may never reach a full charge even in June. Choose the position with the sun in mind, not only the step.
