pacc3 GOOD TO KNOW

Will this work with my existing fittings?

Most of our indoor pieces use standard fittings. The exact fitting is listed in the product details, so check there before you order.

Can I use it outside?

Anything in the outdoor range is weather rated. Indoor pieces are not, so keep those under cover.

Is it dimmable?

Dimmable pieces are marked in the product details. If it is not marked, treat it as fixed output.

Light On The Tread, Not Your Eyes

Twenty-four warm white LEDs set into a flat body that fixes at tread height and washes light downwards. You see each individual step rather than a lit flight with the treads themselves in shadow.

Charges By Day, On At Dusk

A polysilicon panel banks the charge and a light-controlled switch does the rest, so it lights at dusk and goes off at dawn. Nothing to set, and nothing to turn off on a cold morning.

Rated For A British Winter

An ABS and PS body carrying CE, FCC, RoHS, UL and CCC marking. We quote IP65 rather than the IP67 the listing also claims, because understating weatherproofing is the safer error of the two.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it IP65 or IP67?

The manufacturer says both, in two places on the same listing, which is why we quote the lower one. IP65 means it is protected against dust and against water jets from any direction, so rain, snow and a hose are all within range for a step light in a British garden. If the higher rating is confirmed we will update this page, but we will not claim it before then.

How many lights do I get?

Three. This is a three-pack, and it is a separate SKU on the manufacturer’s own variant list, priced as three rather than one. The generic box-contents line on the listing reads as a single light, which is boilerplate carried across every size they sell, so ignore it. Three is also the right number for a short flight: one at the top, one at the bottom and one in the middle of the run.

How long do they run for?

Eight to ten hours from a full charge, which the manufacturer says takes six to eight hours of direct sunlight. The catch with step lights specifically is shade: steps often sit against a wall or under a handrail for much of the day, so the light may never reach a full charge even in June. Choose the position with the sun in mind, not only the step.

Do I need to switch them on each night?

No. A light-controlled switch handles it, so they charge through the day, come on at dusk and go off at dawn with nothing asked of you. There is a master switch on the unit for winter storage or if you want them off for a while. If one refuses to light when you first unbox it, take it somewhere genuinely dark before deciding it is faulty.

Will they light a whole flight of steps?

Each one lights its own step well and the ground immediately around it, so a flight needs several rather than one. Twenty-four LEDs in a downward wash is bright for the job it does, but it is deliberately not a floodlight, since a bright light at the top of a flight puts every tread below it into shadow. Space them down the run instead.

Specifications and full description

What it does

A flat solar light for the riser of a step, the side of a stair run or a low wall. Twenty-four warm white LEDs wash light downwards onto the tread rather than out into your eyes, which is the whole point of a step light.

They are supplied as a pack of three, which is the right number for a short flight: one at the top, one at the bottom and one in the middle. The manufacturer quotes six to eight hours of direct sunlight to charge and eight to ten hours of light from it, with a light-controlled switch so each comes on at dusk without being asked.

Where it belongs

Garden steps, a stair run down to a basement door, the edge of a raised terrace, a low garden wall or a fence panel above a path. Anywhere the hazard is a change in level and the risk is not seeing it in the dark.

Fitted at tread height and spaced down a flight, these do a job no single bright light does well: they show you each step individually rather than lighting the flight from above and casting the treads into shadow.

Charging and run time

A 4.5V polysilicon panel at 120mA feeds a 3.7V 14500 lithium cell of 600mAh. The manufacturer quotes eight to ten hours of light on a full charge, taking six to eight hours of direct sun to get there.

That is a summer figure. Steps often sit in the shade of a wall or a handrail for much of the day, so pick the position with the sun in mind and not just the step you most want lit.

Weather rating, and why we quote the lower one

The manufacturer’s listing states IP67 in one place and IP65 in another. We quote IP65, the more conservative of the two, because we would rather understate weatherproofing than overstate it. IP65 already covers rain, snow and hosing down, so for a step light in a British garden it is the rating that matters.

The body is ABS and PS, and the light carries CE, FCC, RoHS, UL and CCC marking.

The manufacturer’s listing states the weather rating as IP67 in its attributes and IP65 in its product specification. We quote IP65 as the more conservative of the two. The generic box contents on the listing read as one light, but this variant is a distinct three-pack SKU on the manufacturer’s own variant list, priced as three, so three is what ships.
